Edmund Ruffin Beckwith papers, 1753-1949.

The collection includes papers accumulated by Edmund R. Beckwith while he was researching biographical information on his ancester, John Wright Stanly (1742-1789), merchant and Revolutionary patriot of New Bern, N.C. Included are papers of John Beckwith (1785-1870), physician of Raleigh, N.C., and Petersburg, Va., and his wife, Margaret, daughter of J.W. Stanly; papers of Harvey Stanly, Episcopal minister of New Bern and Elizabeth City, N.C., and Somerset County, Md., of his wife, Mary Ann, and of her father, C.R. Kinney (d. 1845), lawyer and legislator of Elizabeth City; scattered papers, chiefly typed transcripts and photocopies, of other members of the Stanly family; and correspondence, 1924-1949, of E.R. Beckwith and family members and research assistants about J.W. Stanly and his descendants.
